Children love dressing up and playing different characters. This is great for emotional development and character development, and parents can guide them as they play. The best part is that as they play these roles, they learn more about the characters behind them, exposing them little by little to the rich and wonderful lore that is the underpinning of the collective consciousness. Halloween was started as a way to teach the young ones about the who’s-who, or more correctly, what’s-what in the paranormal realm. Eventually, Halloween became the costumery event for children.
Vampires are favorite characters even among kids; not because of the bloodsucking but because of the magical powers we attribute to them. By putting on a childs vampire costume, a kid can pretend that he has all the powers vampires are thought to possess. It is always a good choice for Halloween.
Childs vampire costumes are often less elaborate than adult equivalents, though all the basics remain the same. For children, there are only two common choices for playing a vampire; though for girls, there is no real alternative to the traditional style.
For boys, there are two choices, one of which is far more common than the other. This most common type is the classic vampire costume; the caped stalker of the night, to coin a phrase. This costume includes either a black long-sleeved shirt or a white collared long-sleeved shirt and vest for the top. The pants are plain black slacks, nothing particularly special. What really makes the Edwardian vampire costume for boys is the cape and fangs, plus makeup.
The other choice for boys is the were-bat type of vampire costume. This is a costume that depicts a vampire at its most beastly, a horrid fusion of man and bat and a base hunter. This is a pretty rare costume, but it can be totally worth it. The pants are brown, possibly made to look like hairy legs. The body suit, a long-sleeved affair, is made to look like mammal skin, trimmed with a bit of fur. Drooping down from the sleeves are sheets of cloth cut to mimic the shape of bat wings. The mask is the centerpiece though, and it indeed looks like a giant bat’s head.

For girls, the only childs vampire costume is along the lines of the female counterpart of the boys’ Edwardian type. If the boy is a gentleman, then the girl is a lady. A young girl’s vampire costume is centered on a dress with a long skirt and a high collar. Colors lie along the standard dark end of the spectrum. The variety of cuts is where girls can take their pick. The skirt could be full or straight, ankle- or knee-length, et cetera. The top could have puffy sleeves or plain, ruffles or pleats, and so on. Accessories like tiaras, necklaces, chokers, bracelets and rings add even more customization to a girl’s vampire costume.
For both boys and girls, makeup and fangs make or break the costume. Of course, when you are a kid it is just about fun, so make sure that the costume is still comfortable and easy to move in.
