For most people, the word “vampire” is automatically associated with Bela Lugosi’s ever-famous portrayal of Dracula. Dracula, supposedly Vlad Tepes Dracula, is believed to be one of the most powerful vampires ever in the collective consciousness on the paranormal, so it makes sense that people would want to dress up like him. Kids in particular like the Dracula look for Halloween, though they may not fully understand the mystique of the character. Nonetheless, kids Dracula costumes are always popular and are common sights during the season of spooks.

A Dracula costume is exactly what you would think it to be. It is a white shirt and vest, slacks and dress shoes, plus the cape. The devil is in the details they say, and a child's Vampire costume indeed relies on the details that differentiate a good costume from an ordinary or even badly-executed one.
Many of the details presented below are based on the character as portrayed by Bela Lugosi in the eponymous 1931 film. The shirt should be white, with a high collar and long sleeves (see the images above). The shirt may or may not have ruffles, as it seems Lugosi’s character had two outfits. On this he wore a white bow-tie or a dark cravat, which may be assumed to be black or red. He also wore a black or white vest, depending on the outfit. His slacks on the other hand were always black, and so were his dress shoes. Finally he had a cloak, which was full length and black, with a red lining and upright collar.

A boys Dracula costume should include these. There are however, a few accessories which would be appropriate to the period the original story was set in: Victorian Europe. Fine chains of gold may be worn around the neck, while cuffs may be secured with gold cuff-links. Lugosi’s Dracula in particular wore a rather large signet ring on his left hand, which was silver, on which a red face and family seal was etched. To achieve a more gentlemanly look, one could wear a top hat or carry a walking stick, or even both.
The hair should be combed back, slicked down if necessary. Of course, one part of a boys (or men's) Dracula costume is the makeup. The costume feels more authentic if the wearer is made up to be like Dracula. Red lipstick and lined eyebrows on pale foundation make the vampire. One must never forget the iconic fangs, though it may not be easy to find a set that are comfortable for long periods of time. The more creative can even expand this costume further by adding blood effects as if Dracula had just had a “drink”.
A Dracula costume epitomizes the spirit of Halloween, when we revel in the paranormal world that we often ignore for the rest of the year. When the kids grow up, they may want to learn the details and the story behind the costume, and can in turn hold their memories even more fondly. For the moment though, they are kids, and fun is just about all they want.
I think vampire costumes will be the hottest thing this Halloween. Imagine being a vampire, Dracula, or any character from Twilight. What a way to celebrate this holiday…
