Halloween is meant to be a fun time for the kiddies, what with all the running about in costumes and asking for candy.  One can certainly see the appeal the holiday holds for children, and parents are often eager to help their child get in the spirit of things.  Bad puns aside, it can be difficult to choose a costume.  When this happens, remember that the traditional costumes are still the best.  And what could be more traditional to Halloween than the vampire?  A vampire child costume is sure to excite your young one.

The older child, somewhere between 8 and 12, will appreciate the essence of the vampire.  They understand why vampires are scary, and also why Halloween is meant to be scary but not too much so.  Knowing this, they are also more prepared to put up with a little discomfort if doing so means getting a better-looking costume.  This is where the good stuff comes in, so to speak.

To help in choosing the right elements for a kids vampire costume, it helps to think of the gender differentiation for vampires and vampire costumes.  In the Victorian period, men and women dressed very differently, as compared to the more common trends of today.  Men dressed in pants and shirts, while women wore dresses and gowns.  Men often wore blacks, greys, and whites, while women had more color choices.  Of course, for a vampire costume, the darker, more saturated colors are the best choices.  Nothing can beat good old black, while deep purple, midnight blue, and blood red are also in the running.  The idea in choosing a color is that you want to evoke a sense of mystery and danger. Accessories can make or break any costume, and this is certainly true for a kids vampire costume.  Cloaks, mantles, and capes are borderline-expected for the males, while females should go for more suitably-creepy lace and jewelry.  Top hats for the boys will also push the look even more into that Victorian phase.  For the girls, ornate pieces of costume jewelry such as large broaches and pendants can make the look.

Of course makeup and hair should be done right.  High, puffy hairstyles are common for both sexes.  Pale foundation with blue or gray highlights on the eyelids is good for a vampire costume.  Eyeliner to emphasize the eyebrows as well as intensely red lipstick for the lips improves the look even further.  Lastly, don’t forget the fangs!
